A Newcomer's Guide - Official Updates to Make When Moving

Welcome to your new home! Moving is always so.... fun.... and there's a lot to juggle. To make your life a bit easier, here’s a handy checklist of official updates you need to make as soon as you settle in. Let’s get started!

1. Update Your Address with USPS:

2. Driver's License and Vehicle Registration:

3. Notify your Employer

  • Drop a quick email to HR or update your info in the company portal so your paycheck and tax forms don't get lost in the shuffle.

4. Update your Voter Registration

  • Go to the National Voter Registration website or your county’s election office site to get this one done. Here is the Travis County Clerk's website.

5. Inform Your Banks and Credit Card Companies

  • Log into your online banking accounts or give customer service a ring.

6. Update Your Insurance Policies

  • To ensure your home, auto, health, and life insurance details are correct, call your insurance agents or update your info on their websites.

7. Notify Healthcare Providers

  • Call your doctor, dentist, and other providers to update your info. If you need to find new local providers, start on that soon so you are prepared when something comes up. Ask your previous provider to forward all your records to your new provider for the most seamless transition.

8. Update Subscription Services

  • Log into each service’s website and update your address in the account settings. This is particularly important for any physical product subscriptions like pet medication, meal prep services, etc...

9. Inform Friends and Family

  • Make sure the family Christmas cards aren't being sent to strangers!

10. Update Online Shopping Accounts

  • Prevents your packages from ending up at your old place. Update your address on sites like Amazon, eBay, and other online retailers.

11. Update Your Pet’s Microchip Information

  • Ensure your furry friend can find their way home if they get lost. Contact the company managing your pet’s microchip to update your info. There is usually an online portal.

12. Notify the IRS

  • Submit Form 8822 to the IRS. Find it on the IRS website.

Moving involves more than just unpacking. By updating these critical details, you’ll ensure a seamless transition to your new home. Congratulations again on the new home.
